After our studies Painting at KASK Gent, we started working on a visual oeuvre where the individual manifesto disappeared in the background. Even now, we still think the question "Who is the author of the image?" is interesting and stimulating. With the contemporary information sources artists use elements and images from the internet, sample interesting images, ruminate on bad images etc. We found the balance between unicity and copy remarkable in pictures in theatre magazines, the directed figures from adverts and the the images in our dreams that are influenced by them. We recycled these images by imitating them literally or by making an Inkling version of them. The Wacom Inkling is a device consisting of a pressure sensitive ballpoint pen and a receiver that turns the manual drawings into vectorial drawings. The device is not flawless, it often falters. Minuscule shifts in the lines give the drawings a stubborn and unique character. The drawings were then manipulated on the computer and then again traced manually and etched into a copper plate. We made a waterproof print on rice paper, on which the drawing of the etching was printed and glued according to the Chiné-collé method. The technical imperfections that arise in the process of converting the analog into digital and vice versa and the recycling of the image breathe a layeredness. But at the same time, it puts the source of the image into perspective.

Na onze studie schilderkunst aan KASK Gent, werkten we samen aan een beeldend oeuvre waardoor het individuele manifest op de achtergrond verdween. “Wie is de maker van het beeld?” – vinden we nog steeds een drijvende en boeiende vraag. Met de hedendaagse informatiebronnen gebruiken kunstenaars elementen en beelden van internet, samplen bestaande interessante beelden, herkauwen slechte beelden, etc. Het balanceren tussen uniciteit en kopie vonden we treffend bij foto’s in theatermagazines, geregisseerde figuren uit advertenties en de daardoor beïnvloede beelden die we dromen. We recycleerden deze beelden door ze letterlijk te imiteren of door er een Inkling versie van te maken. De Wacom Inkling is een apparaat bestaande uit een drukgevoelige balpen en een ontvanger die manuele tekeningen vectorieel registreert. Het ding hapert vaak, het werkt onnauwkeurig. Minuscule verschuivingen in de lijnvoering geven het een koppig en uniek karakter. De tekeningen werden vervolgens bewerkt op computer en opnieuw manueel getraceerd en ingeëtst op koperplaat. We maakten een watervaste print op rijstpapier, daarop werd de etstekening afgedrukt en gekleefd volgens de Chine-collé methode. De technische imperfecties die doorheen het hele proces van omzetten tussen analoog en digitaal ontstaan en de recyclage van bestaande beelden ademen een gelaagdheid. Maar tevens relativeert dit de oorsprong van het beeld.
